Archive: Review Methodology

Editor’s note: This is out of date, but preserved here for posterity. If you’d like to see this methodology in action, check out an old review.

Each review will include a short overview of the location with information like price, formality, dining format and links to my previous reviews of the establishment, if any exist. It will also include the type of establishment. There are 5 types of places that serve wings that I might review:

Wing Place: A “wing place” probably has the word “wing” in the name, and though they may offer other types of food, wings are the focus of their menu. These places often have a wide variety of sauces and will merit multiple visits. Examples in the area include Buffalo Wild Wings, St. Louis Wing Co. & O! Wing Plus.

Known For Wings Place: A “known for wings place” is a restaurant where wings are not the focus of the menu, but they are known for chicken wings, or perceive themselves to be known for chicken wings, as indicated by a silly star or logo next to it on their menu. These places often have at least a few different sauce options. Examples include Culpepper’s, Nick’s Pub, & Sybergs/Helen Fitzgerald’s.

Place That Serves Wings: A “place that serves wings” is any restaurant that has chicken wings on their menu and doesn’t fall into either of the categories above. These places probably don’t have a lot of sauce options. Examples include… most bars.

Grocery Place: A “grocery place” is a grocery store, butcher shop, or maybe even a deli that offers some variety of already prepared chicken wing that you can eat at home. These normally come from from the deli counter at a grocery store. Frozen selections like “TGI Fridays Wings” will not be reviewed here. Examples include Dierberg’s, Schnucks, and Baumann’s Fine Meats

Home Places: A “home place” is a review of a chicken wing recipe, made either by me, my wife, my friends or a stranger who’s house I break into while they are eating home made wings. These will involve cooking. Frozen selections like “TGI Fridays Wings” will not be reviewed here. Click for examples.

The primary focus of each review will be on an individual type of wing. If I get multiple types of wings, each one get its own write-up & ranking. There are 5 rankings a wing can get. Here’s what they are and each one means:

Bad: Don’t order these. I probably didn’t finish mine.
Fine: Get something else… unless you really want wings, and these are the only option.
Good: I’d order these again (most common ranking)
Great: I look forward to eating these again.
Best: I will go out of my way to eat these again. I know that “Best” is a superlative and you’d think that there could only be one best chicken wing in St. Louis. However, like pizza, there are so many different styles of chicken wing that there can be multiple bests. If I rank something as “best”, I will specify what I think it is best at.

Each type of wing will also be pictured (when polite) and given a couple paragraphs of description. The review will conclude with the time & date that I ate the food reviewed, and the street address.
