Epic Pizza & Subs

Wings Reviewed: “Wood Fired Buffalo Wings”

Genre: Place That Serves Wings

Overview: Epic Pizza & Subs holds an enviable position of being next door to my favorite bar in St. Louis, iTap Soulard. iTap doesn’t serve any food (they only serve beer), so if you want food, you go over to Epic and order it, and they’ll deliver it to you at your table. It’s a great situation. Epic only has one variety of wings, “Wood Fired Buffalo Wings” that I presume they make in the same oven as their wood fired pizzas. They also only have one quantity of wings (12) which are available at one price ($10.95). I’ve never actually eaten in house, but I’ve ordered their wings & pizza to be delivered to iTap multiple times. If you eat there, it’s casual and they have pizzas, subs, and other appetizers and sides for those not interested in wings.

Epic has some really good wings. The sauce is maybe a little more black-peppery than the traditional buffalo sauce, and the way they cook them works really well. These wings are definitely on the hotter side of traditional hot wings, but we had a couple orders of wings amongst our table of about 10 friends and no one who ate them found them unbearably hot.

They call the wings “wood fired” but I am not sure if they are “trashed” or not. Trashed wings are when they fry them, sauce them, and then throw them on the grill. Sometimes they sauce them again after that. Either way, these wings have a great crispness that comes from their time in the wood fired oven. On my wings, there were just a few blackened sides & I thought they were perfectly cooked. On the other order, the wings appeared to be a little more burnt. I ate a couple. They were still delicious. And while the oven crisped the wings up, it didn’t dry them out. They were still well-sauced and messy to eat, as they should be.

I’ve stated in my about section that I don’t eat celery and I should note that these wings are served with a couple cucumber slices instead. I think this is an upgrade, but I didn’t eat them this time. Epic has good pizza, but the wings are still my favorite thing on the menu. I order them every time I’m hungry at iTap.
