The Golden Hoosier

Since it opened in 2021, the Golden Hoosier has been a bit of a staple for Lydia (my wife who is a whole human being in her own right) and I. It’s walkable from our home, and has very enjoyable vibes. Do we take our kids there? Sometimes. Will Lydia and I go there for dinner if we have a babysitter? No, not really. Will Lydia and I go there as a last stop before going home when we have a babysitter? Yes, regularly!

The proximity to home is great. The bartenders are always pleasant. Also they have Busch on tap and if you’re trying to make a particularly bad decision, you can get a shot of Jeppson’s Malört here. There aren’t many places in St. Louis where you can enjoy our city’s finest macro-lager on tap along side Chicago’s most noxious liqueur.

Crucially, they also have 2 varieties of chicken wings and I think one of them is great. (The other is good enough, but didn’t quite live up to my hopes the one time I tried it.)

Which ones are great?!

I found the tandoori wings underwhelming. I haven’t had them in awhile and don’t remember much specifically about them.

But the buffalo wings are great! They aren’t too spicy. I’d call it a pretty standard buffalo sauce that is maybe a bit more black-pepper forward. The presentation is nice, with all 8 wings lined up in a nice row.

My order on my most recent visit… was not quite hot by the time it was served to me, but I don’t remember this being a problem in the past and it didn’t really impact my enjoyment of the wings. They were well cooked and very flavorful which has been my experience every time.

Other food here is also good. They have an adequate kids menu, and plenty of fun options for adults. Nothing here is particularly cheap, but if go before 6 (maybe just on week days?) Busch drafts are only $2!
