McDonald’s

Wings Reviewed: Might Wings

Genre: Place That Serves Wings

Overview: I have an irrational hatred of McDonald’s. Starting sometime in high school, I decided I wasn’t going to eat there anymore and I kept that up through college and a couple years after that.

I broke down on a couple years ago on a road trip with my family to my brother’s college graduation. I got a burger, and I still thought it was gross. The fries, however, were fine, and the fountain soda, the one thing that I missed in my 6+ year hiatus was exceptional.

Almost 2 years removed from that reintroduction, I haven’t eaten another meal at McDonald’s. But when I started seeing the barrage of advertisements for the Mighty Wings, I knew I would have to give ‘em a try.

I’m not going to give you an overview of McDonald’s because… it’s McDonald’s. Even if you haven’t ever been to one, you’ve probably seen enough commercials for it to know what this place is all about. They don’t have many other buffalo-wing type offerings, though I’d imagine you could get the buffalo dipping sauce with their nuggets or fries or anything else on their menu.

McDonald’s food is supposed to be eaten in the car while driving, right? I’ve never done this with wings before, but I’m just trying to emulate the probable use cases of my readership.

STL Wing Review isn’t a fried chicken review site and the Mighty Wings are clearly fried chicken. However, they’re called Wings, the spice is emphasized in the promotional material, and they serve it with a plethora of dipping sauces. Therefore, I’m putting them under my jurisdiction.

All this to say, this is some pretty good fried chicken. The skin/breading was crispy and the meat was juicy. The seasoning provided a good amount of spice that made these wings enjoyable to eat on their own. If you told me these wings were from KFC, I’d probably believe you. They also are a good small size. They come in 3, 5 and 10 pieces and I got 5. Next time if I wanted a full meal, I’d get 10.

I got the spicy buffalo sauce with my wings, and this was spicy, as advertised. If this sauce was covering my wings, it may have been one of the spicier dishes reviewed on this site. As it was, I only had one hand at my disposal, and I had a hard time getting a lot of sauce on my wing. This problem could be alleviated if you weren’t trying to do something dangerous like eat wings and drive. I can’t confirm this, but the sauce was thick in a way that makes me suspicious of a mayonnaise or mayonnaise type agent.

If I find myself at McDonald’s, I will absolutely order these wings again. I’d like to see what some of their other sauces are about (sweet chili, tangy bbq, chipotle bbq and hot habanero all sound interesting enough). It’s good to have something I know I’ll like on the McDonald’s menu. I hope they stick around.

Other good reading on these wings exist. Check out the Serious Eats review.
