Ari’s

Wings Reviewed: Ari’s Famous Wings

Genre: Place that serves wings

Overview: After going to church with my wife and parents today, someone suggested going to Ari’s Restaurant and Bar, a Greek restaurant at the corner of Hampton & Arsenal. When I looked at the menu and saw “Ari’s Famous Wings: Twelve pieces tossed in our homemade hot sauce.” I admit, I was a little bit surprised. I wasn’t ready for wings, but there the wings were, ready for me, and it is my duty to report.

We ate outside, and I never actually went inside so I can’t comment on the atmosphere at Ari’s. I’m pretty sure that any type of attire is acceptable. The outside dining area is nice, but it’s located on a pretty busy street so if you don’t like noise, you should probably eat inside. The wings are $7.45 for 12 and they are easily enough for a meal. This is my first time going to Ari’s EVER.

Even with the word “Famous” as a descriptor on the menu, I wasn’t expecting much from these wings. When I ordered them, I was mentally prepared to give out my first “fair” review. But by the time I was through my first wing, I was debating between good and great. I don’t know who made these wings famous, but they sure are tasty.

Ari’s Famous Wings are fried, not breaded, and weren’t notably crispy or soggy. The homemade hot sauce was a slightly modified version of traditional Franks/butter sauce. Seemed to be a little more acidic and less fatty. The spice level was right in the middle range of average for a buffalo wing, maybe even a little hotter. The difference, which really cooled things down and added a different textural element, was the generous heaping of grated parmesan on top of the wings. I would never have thought to add parmesan to a buffalo wing, but I’ve got to say that it worked pretty well.

When you go to a greek restaurant, you probably aren’t looking for wings. But if you end up at Ari’s and decide that’s what you need, you won’t be disappointed with these guys.
