Biggies

I went to Biggies last night and had some chicken wings.

Biggies is a bar’s bar. When asked what was on tap, our waitress responded “Budweiser”. Simple enough. Their list of bottled beers harkens back to a day when craft beers were for pretentious weirdos (You’re telling me craft beers are STILL for pretentious weirdos?) but they also had a few different seasonal local craft options… I got a Busch.

So, how about these wings? They cost $9.25 and are served as-is. Blue Cheese is $.50 extra. I’m sure I could get celery on request but of course, I wouldn’t. I don’t understand wing condiments like these, and so I’m happy not to their costs built in to my wing-price.

As for the wings themselves, they are exactly what you’d want of bar wings. The sauce was plentiful, to the point of there being a pool of it at the bottom of the bowl, but the unbreaded wings maintained their crispiness. The wings were normal-sized, and as far as I’m concerned, the smaller the wings, the better. Jumbo wings are weird, and I’m suspicious of any place that insists upon marketing their wings as such.

These wings weren’t very spicy, but weren’t bland. Seems like a standard hot-sauce and butter situation, which is all that standard wings need. Biggies also offers BBQ and Mustard sauces in addition to the “Original Sauce” buffalo version that I had.

I didn’t count how many wings I had, or weigh to see whether or not I got a pound of them, but this order served just fine as my dinner. An added bonus is that you get a basket of bread for your table when you sit down. I recommend saving a piece of two to soak up the sauce at the bottom of the bowl when your wings are gone. A piece of bread makes more sense to me as a wing accompaniment than celery or blue cheese anyway.

Biggies has an extensive menu featuring sandwiches, steaks, pastas and pizza but if you’re in the mood for wings, you won’t have to look below the second item on the menu. These will do just fine.
